What Dealers Usually Apply
Most dealership paint protection is a sprayed or hand applied polymer sealant, a product closer to a long life wax than to a ceramic coating. It is applied quickly in the pre delivery bay, which limits both preparation and the durability any product can achieve.
Questions Worth Asking
Ask for the actual product name, who applies it, what preparation is done and how a warranty claim works in practice. If the answers are vague or the warranty needs annual paid top ups to stay valid, you have learned what you need to know.

A professional ceramic bonds to the clear coat as a measurable hard layer after machine polishing, and carries a multi year guarantee. A sealant sits on top and washes away over months. Both add gloss on day one, which is why they get confused.

The Finance Detail
Dealer protection is commonly rolled into the loan, so the package price accrues interest for the term. Paying a workshop directly costs what the invoice says. That is arithmetic rather than criticism, and it belongs in the comparison. You will find the same detail for the BMW M cars and Mercedes.
