Graphene Coating

Graphene Coating Melbourne

Graphene coatings are the loudest product in car care right now, so here is the straight version: a graphene coating is a ceramic coating with a small amount of graphene oxide in the resin, not a new category of protection. The additive can improve water spotting behaviour, and the rest of the marketing runs well ahead of the chemistry. We coat cars every week and will happily talk you through what actually matters. Call 1800 985 880 or text 0483 930 888 for advice on your car. There are dedicated guides for the Porsche 911 and Ferrari.

What Graphene Is

Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms in a hexagonal lattice, absurdly strong for its thickness and a genuine wonder material in electronics. In a car coating it appears as graphene oxide blended into an otherwise conventional silica resin at a small fraction of the bottle. We have written the same guidance for the BMW M cars and Mercedes.

Marketing Versus Label

Read the data sheet of any graphene coating and you find a ceramic base doing the real work. The honest claims are incremental: slightly better heat dispersion and reduced water spotting. Claims of double the lifespan of ceramic have no independent testing behind them. The same work is set out for Audi and Toyota.

What Determines Durability

Four things decide how long any coating lasts: paint preparation, applied thickness, wash habits and the warranty document behind it. Brand chemistry sits fifth. A well prepped ceramic outlives a graphene coating slapped over swirls every single time. We cover Mazda on its own page.

Where Graphene Helps

The anti static and heat dispersion properties are real in the lab and modest on a car. Owners mainly notice water spots wiping away more easily after summer rain. If that is the deciding factor for you, a graphene infused topper can be worth having.

Our Recommendation

We coat with Gtechniq because the guarantees are written, registered and honoured through accredited installers: five years on Crystal Serum Light, nine on Ultra. A warranty you can claim beats a lifespan figure in an ad. Details on our ceramic coating page.

Coating From $980

Whichever chemistry you land on, our coating packages start at $980 and include decontamination and single stage machine polishing. The preparation is identical regardless of what the bottle says, and it is most of the labour.

Stones Beat Any Coating

No coating, graphene or otherwise, stops a stone chip. Coatings resist chemicals, UV and wash marks. For impact protection the only real answer is paint protection film, and the two work well layered together, from $650 for coating over film. You will find the same detail for Tesla and EV protection.

Correction Comes First

Every coating locks in the surface beneath it, so swirled paint stays swirled, just shinier. We machine polish before any coating and offer multi stage paint correction where the paint needs it. Skipping this step to fund a fancier bottle is backwards. The same work is set out for the Tesla Model S and supercar protection.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you book. Anything else, call 1800 985 880.

Is graphene coating better than ceramic coating?

It is a ceramic coating, with graphene oxide added. The additive brings small gains in water spotting and heat behaviour. Preparation and aftercare influence the result far more than the additive does.

How long does a graphene coating last?

Realistically three to five years with good care, similar to a quality ceramic. Ten year claims on consumer graphene bottles are marketing. If lifespan matters, buy the written guarantee, not the headline.

Why do you fit Gtechniq instead of a graphene brand?

Because Gtechniq backs its professional coatings with registered guarantees of five and nine years through accredited installers. We would rather stand behind enforceable paper than a trend.

Can graphene coating go over my existing ceramic?

No. Any coating needs to bond to bare clear coat, so the old layer comes off with machine polishing first. That is true for graphene, ceramic and everything in between.

Does a coated car still need washing?

Yes, just faster. Dirt releases easily and water sheets off, but nothing is self cleaning. A fortnightly pH neutral wash keeps any coating performing for its full life.
